Graduate Institute of Education
Provincial Taiwan College of Education is the predecessor of National Changhua University of Education, and the Department of Counseling, Science Education and Vocational Education were founded when the school was established in 1971.
Professors in Department of Counseling took the responsibility of the plan for educational programs and promotion of the teaching missions. In 1996, the establishment of our Institute of Education was approved by the Ministry of Education, and all of the teachers were transferred from the Department of Counseling (renamed as Department of Guidance and Counseling). Now, the office and the teaching places are set on the third floor in the Ming De Building (Department of Guidance and Counseling).
Teachers in our institute are not only responsible for teaching and research but also the main body of Educational Program for Secondary School Teachers in our university. “Teacher Cultivation” is now in charge of the affairs of Educational Programs for Secondary School Teachers. Our school set up an Educational Program for Elementary Schools in the academic year of 2002, and our personnel within our institute were responsible for curriculum mapping and teaching.
Dr. Wan-Yi Lin was the first chair of the Institute. Dr. Qiu-Xun Guo, Dr. Cong-Wen Chen, Dr. De-Xiang Huang and Dr. Su-Ching Lin were respectively the second, third, fourth and fifth chair. From February of 2008, Dr. Zi-He Wang was the substitute president temporarily. From February in 2009, Dr. Chung-Ping Yang was the sixth president. Dean Shu-Zhu Zhao was the chair from March to July in 2010. From August in 2010, Dr. Hsin-Yi Kung was the seventh director. From August in 2013, Dr. Chih-Hung Wang was the eighth chair, and from August in 2016, Dr. Gwo-Jen Lin is the ninth chair.
Our current class is multiple, including Master's program, Doctoral program, Master of Education in School Administration, In-Service Administration Master Program for the Teachers of Independent Chinese Secondary Schools in Malaysia, Master Program of Educational Innovation and Human Resource Development, and Continuing Master's Program in Education。
In the academic year of 1996, we recruited nine graduate students, and in the following year, we enrolled 15 graduate students (12 general students and 3 vocational students). Eighteen graduate students were enrolled in the academic year of 2002. the institute started recruiting graduate students for cultivating high education academic research talents, and we started recruiting doctoral students in the academic year of 2003.
In the academic years 1997 and 1998, the institute set up a 40-credit program which has been since submerged into alternative organizational structures. In the academic year of 1999, we established night class and summer class for In-Service Secondary School Administration Master Program, and in 2003, the program continued recruitment.
Our programs provide new pathways for professional development for overseas Chinese high school administrators in order to meet our strategic goal of fostering and cultivating international talents. To implement the concept of "international exchange and academic sharing", we have started to cooperate with New Era College of Malaysia to set up a "Malaysian Chinese independent high school administration master's degree course" in 2008.
Our four visions are respectively diversification, excellence, innovation, and care. The specific definition of four visions is described as below.
Diversification: To provide students with diversified academic courses, to adopt diversified teaching and evaluation methods, and to cultivate talents with diverse abilities and vision on the basis of education major.
Excellence: To strive for excellence in education research, teaching and service. To ensure excellent research, teaching and service quality, to cultivate high-quality academic research, education administrative talents and excellent teachers, to move towards the leading position.
Innovation: In response to the rapidly changing world situation and education trend, always keeping new thinking and taking the initiative to adjust and transform. Continuous innovation and progress in teaching, research and service, mastering international new trends of thought, and cultivating talents with critical thinking and creativity.
Care: To care for and study the issue about disadvantaged people in education in the society, and to cultivate the caring and respectful moral qualities of education professionals. Be capable of caring for nature, self and society, and upholding the value of social justice.
